Mata leads out his country against Uruguay.

It was a proud moment for the WPSS family today as programme graduate and now professional footballer Max Mata captained New Zealand at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Mata who is now based in Switzerland with Grasshopper Zurich, made his tournament debut after sitting out a 2 game suspension (carried over from the Oceania Qualifiers) and was given the arm band against Uruguay.

Mata was joined in the starting 11 by his WPSS brother Leon van den Hoven who also featured for the first time this morning.

With both teams having already qualified for the round of 16 New Zealand needed a draw to ensure top spot in the group.

Uruguay had other ideas however securing a 2 nil win and top spot with virtually the last kick of the game.

New Zealand now turn their attentions to the knock out phase where their opponents will be Colombia.

Make sure you get behind Miya and the boys this Monday morning, 6.30 am live on Sky Sports!
